One of the most famous racehorses was Phar Lap who raced between 1928 to 1932 and won the 1930 Melbourne Cup. Some other legendry Melbourne Cup horses are Makyde Diva, Cane Smoke, Paleface Adios and Cardigan Bay. They are just a few horses that have shaped horse racing in Australia.
1. Melbourne Cup.
This race that started in 1861 is known all over the world as a Thourough Bred horse racing, and is known as the race that stops a nation and attracts many international entries. It is said to be the richest 2 mile handicap and the richest turf races in the world. Victoria Racing Club conducts the 3,200 meter race for 3 year olds and over, on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. This race will be held in 6th November 2012.
2. William Reid Stakes.
This race was formerly known as Australia Stakes. The distance ran over is 1200 meters at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne by Group 1 Australian Thorough Bred horse race at Weight For Age. William Reid Stakes found it’s name from William Reid who was a Victorian banker and a renowned horse owner and had several prominent racehorse in early 1900′s. He owned the famous Uncle Sam who won the Caulfield Cup in 1912 and 1914. From there we have had the Global Spring Challenge, Lightning Stakes and King Stand Stakes and now replaced by The Age Classic in the Australian Leg of The Global Sprint Challenge. The winner gets A$500,000 after the race which is held in February.
3. Underwood Stakes.
This is a Group One Thorough Bred horse race which is held at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne. It is ran under Weight For Age conditions on 1800 meters. Some examples of notable champions in the past are Northerly, Heroic, Ajax, Phar, Lap, Tobin Bronze and Octagonal. During the race the total prize money is A$350,000 and the winner recieves $210,000. The race is held late September each year.
4. Manikato Stakes.
This race is named after the racehorse Manikato who won twice and recording 5 wins in the William Reid Stakes in 1979 to 1983. It’s a Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC) Group 1 Thourough Bred horse race that is run under Weight of Age conditions with a distance of 1200 meters. The winner of Manikato Stakes qualifies automatically for a Berth in the United States and Breeder’s Cup Turf Sprint. The race is held in September and the total prize is A$510,000.
5. Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
Also known as The Invitation Stakes, it is a Group 1 Thorough Bred open handicap horse race that runs a distance of 1400 meters at Caulfield Racecourse Melbourne. Some of the past winners have been Encosta De lago, Manikato and Toorak Toff. Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is held in September with prize money being $350,000.
